ISTARS Simulation Foundations Instructor Online Course

The Office of Interprofessional Simulation, Training, Assessment, Research and Safety (ISTARS) provides and manages ISTARS Simulation Foundations Instructor Online Course, a course developed for the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) faculty. ISTARS Simulation Foundations Instructor Online Course is an online, self-paced course that is offered through Canvas, UMMC's learning management system.

Simulation-based education (SBE) has become an integral part of the way students are educated across health curricula. Research has shown properly designed simulation experiences enhance clinical reasoning and transition into practice.  Many healthcare educators lack the knowledge in simulation pedagogy and best practices; thus, minimizing opportunities for students to meet learning outcomes. This course will bridge this gap by providing education on best-practices and strategies for using simulation.

UMMC educators have limited time to attend live sessions and come from a variety of backgrounds.  This format allows the instructor to meet their own learning gaps through individual assigned online modules. This online enduring material course is appropriate because it allows learners to engage with the material on their own timeline and allows for individualized education plans. 

Educational Objectives: 

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner should be able to: 

Module 1: Simulation Basics 

• Demonstrate the correct use of simulation terminology by reviewing the SSH glossary and Simulation Dictionary. 
• Analyze the NCSBN Guidelines and select a prewritten scenario to assist the learner in meeting the NCSBN Simulation Guidelines within their course. 

Module 2: Design, Outcomes, and Objectives 

• Determine topics for integrating simulation into the curriculum by using a needs assessment. 
• Illustrate how to create a simulation scenario using a template and scenario progression outline. 
• Construct an evidence-based simulation scenario to meet the learner's needs. 

Module 3: Facilitation and Professional Integrity 

• Assess the role of the facilitator in a simulation. 
• Evaluate practices which aid the learner in achieving the learning objectives and maintaining fidelity. 
• Illustrate cueing practices within simulation scenarios. 
• Evaluate the preparation necessary to maximize learner outcomes in simulation. 
• Evaluate the components of a safe learning environment. 
• Evaluate elements for maintaining a safe learning environment. 

Module 4: Debriefing 

• Demonstrate implementation of the INACSL Standard of Debriefing. 
• Demonstrate debriefing concepts and basic implementation techniques. 
• Utilize the Ladder of Inference to self-assess feedback techniques. 
• Demonstrate the three phases of debriefing. 
• Evaluate positive and negative debriefing behaviors. 
• Discuss and implement debriefing conversations utilizing theoretical frameworks and structured debriefing models. 
• Recommend feedback to a facilitator utilizing the DASH tool. 

Module 5: Interprofessional Simulations 

• Apply the IPE core competencies for Interprofessional collaborative practice in a scenario. 
• Discuss the elements necessary for implementing interprofessional simulation. 
• Discuss the barriers and benefits of interprofessional simulation. 
• Recommend facilitator roles and responsibilities in developing and running interprofessional simulation. 
• Identify necessary components for sustaining interprofessional simulation. 

Module 6: Standardized Patients 

• Evaluate knowledge of ASPE Best Practices. 
• Compare video interviews with community college educators, academic medical directors, and standardized patients. 
• Discuss the definition, function, opportunity, value, and challenges of standardizing patients. 
• Evaluate the process involved in SP case preparation. 
• Demonstrate SP evaluation techniques. 
• Examine methods of SP recruitment, conducting interviews, determining qualifications, payment scales, and training time. 
• Evaluate information to give SP. 

Module 7: Evaluation 

• Describe the purpose of simulation evaluation. 
• Construct appropriate evaluation methods to assess learner performance. 
• Describe the appropriate use of formative, summative, and high states evaluation when using simulation to assess student learning. 
• Construct appropriate evaluation tools to evaluate simulation. 

Target Audience

Any clinical or nonclinical individuals from UMMC.

The ISTARS Simulation Foundations Instructor Online Course is made up of various modules and evaluations related to principles of teaching and learning, and the course is offered through Canvas.

Once you are registered, you will receive an email confirmation from Canvas. Then, to complete the course, follow the steps listed below. 

• Log into Canvas using your UMMC username and password. 
• Click on Courses, and click on the ISTARS Simulation Foundations Instructor Online Course. Familiarize yourself with the ISTARS Simulation Foundations Instructor Online Course, and click on Modules to begin. 
• Click on the first item, and proceed through the modules until all are complete. Note: You may log in and out of Canvas, completing the modules at your own pace and convenience.

Continuing Education Credit 

Continuing education credit may be earned for some disciplines. In order to receive CE credit for the completed module, you must complete the module evaluation survey. Email aherrington@umc.edu to inform us that you have completed all requirements for your assigned module(s).
